Overview
Business solutions, profitability enhancement, and information analysis are a few of the skills employers seek in today’s accounting field. In large companies, accounting graduates may be responsible for recording, classifying, reconciling, and analyzing business transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). At smaller firms, accountants may be responsible for maintaining part or all of a company’s financial records through the full accounting cycle.
Accounting provides a universal base that allows students to speak the language of business. A functional understanding of QuickBooks equips students with proficiency in widely used accounting software in the profession. Other skills students will acquire through training at Ensign College include:
• Critical thinking and problem solving
• Professional judgment and decision making
• Anticipation of internal and external user information needs
• Cost assignment and responsibility accounting concepts
• Spreadsheet functions, formulas, and data tools used in accounting and managerial analysis
• Preparation for Excel Specialist Certification
• Preparation for QuickBooks Online Certification
People who are detail-oriented and orderly enjoy accounting work. Strong interpersonal communication skills, ethical judgment, and the ability to maintain confidentiality also contribute to success in this profession.
Career Opportunities
Career opportunities are available across a wide range of industries for individuals with accounting skills. Every organization must maintain accurate records of business and financial activities, creating ongoing demand for trained accounting professionals. In larger organizations, graduates may work in specialized accounting support roles, assisting with specific functions such as transaction processing, reconciliations, payroll, or accounts payable and receivable. In smaller organizations, graduates may be responsible for maintaining a broader portion of the accounting system, including recording transactions, preparing basic financial reports, and supporting managerial decision-making.
This certificate prepares students for entry-level accounting positions such as accounting clerk, bookkeeper, accounting assistant, or payroll assistant, as well as for expanded responsibilities with additional experience or education. The skills developed through this certificate also provide a strong foundation for continued study in accounting or related business programs.
